Tap Dance Syllabus Level 1 - roughly the order I teach it

 

ESSENTIAL STEPS

Toe (flat) - 1 - lift the toe but keep the heel on the floor, then drop the toe to the floor: 100-120bpm

Heel - 1 - hit your heel flat against the floor: 100-120bpm

Toe Toe Heel Heel - 1&2& - toe TOE heel HEEL: 70-90bpm

 

Stamp - 1 - hit the foot flat against the floor with your weight on it: 100-120bpm

Stomp - 1 - hit the foot flat against the floor with NO weight on it: 100-120bpm

Step (Leap) - 1 - place the ball of the foot on the floor with weight on it: 100-120bpm

Touch - 1 - place the ball of the foot on the floor with NO weight on it: 100-120bpm

 

Toe (Tip) - 1 - hit the very front edge of the toe on the floor: 100-120bpm

Dig (Heel) - 1 - hit the back edge of the heel tap against the floor: 100-120bpm

 

Step Heel - 1& - step heel: 80-100bpm

Dig Toe (Heel Toe) - 1& - dig toe: 80-100bpm  

Dig Toe Step Heel (Heel Toe Toe Heel) - 1&2& - dig toe STEP HEEL: 80-100bpm

 

Hop - 1 - propel yourself into the air off of one foot and land on the ball of that same foot: 80-100bpm

Jump - 1 - propel yourself into the air and land on the balls of both feet at the same time: 90-110bpm

Chug - 1 - lift heels, slide forward and then drop the heels at the end of the slide: 80-100bpm.

 

Brush - 1 - swing foot forward (front or diagonally side) hitting only the ball tap: 80-100bpm

Flap - &1 or a1 - brush step: 100-130bpm

Flap Heel - &1 2 or &a1 - brush step heel: 100-130bpm

Flap Ball Change - a1 a2 or &1&2 - brush step STEP step: 90-120bpm

 

Spank (Brush Back, Draw, Pull) - 1 - swing the foot backwards hitting the ball tap along the way: 80-100bpm

Spank Step (Back Flap) - &1 or a1 - spank step: 90-120bpm

Spank Step Heel - a1 2 or &a1 - spank step heel: 100-130bpm - swing, 70-100bpm - even

Heel Stand - 1 - Jump up onto the back edges of both heel taps at the same time: 90-100bpm

Step Heel Turn - 1&2& - step heel (turning - 2 step heels per rotation): 80-100bpm

Flap Heel Turn - &1 2 or &a1 - brush step heel (turning): 70-90bpm - swing, 50-70bpm - even

Slide - 1 - run or push off of one leg and allow your feet to glide along the floor: no set bpm

 

OPTIONAL STEPS

Leap - 1 - push off of one foot and into the air and land on the ball of the other foot: 90-110bpm

Clunk - 1 - hit the inside of the toe and heel tap against the floor at the same time: 100-120bpm

Pullback (Pull, Pick-Up - I consider these a different step, Grab-Off) - a1 - jump backwards and as your feet leave the floor they both do a "spank" at the same time then both feet land on the balls of the feet at the same time: 80-100bpm

In and Out Pullback - a1 a2 - start feet apart, pull both feet into the air and land feet together, pull into the air and land feet apart: 80-100bpm

 

Step Toe (Tip) Hop Turn - 1&a2&a - step TOE (TIP) hop (turning - 2 sets per rotation): 50-70bpm.

Buffalo Turn - 1&a2 - (cross foot in front) step (leap) SHUFFLE STEP (turning): 80-100bpm

Step Irish Turn - 1e&a2 or 1&2&3 - step SHUFFLE hop STEP (turning): 70-90bpm

 

OPTIONAL STEPS

Click 1 - click either the toe or heel taps together: 90-110bpm

Smack - 1 - step on the ball of the foot with a straight leg (can also be done without weight): 90-110bpm.

Slam - 1 - jump-out with straight legs and barely go into the air: 80-100bpm

Leap Heel - 1 - push off of one foot and into the air and land on the ball of the other foot, heel:110-130bpm

Travel Step - 1&a - step out to the side, SPANK, STEP IN: 60-80bpm

Crossing Pullback - a1 - pull both feet into the air and land so that one foot is crossed in front of the other: 80-100bpm

Heel Stand Turn - 1 - jump onto the back edges of your heels while turning: 80-100bpm

Some classes move very quickly and others more slowly. Also, I doubt anyone will get to each step in every level. I know I certainly don't. I try to hit the important ones and the rest are optional if I get around to them.
