FLAP&1 or a1 – brush step

Tip: To keep the sounds clean do the following: Avoid pointing the foot. Avoid hitting the first sound of the flap too far back. Lift the ball tap up off the floor IMMEDIATELY after it hits. Don’t kick the foot too far forward after the brush.

Common Problems & Fixes

Flaps - Problems: The brush scrapes. The brush kicks out too far to the front (for faster flaps).

Solutions: Imagine your toe tap dipped in paint - then paint a dot with your brush NOT a stripe. Start the brush sound further away from your standing leg (only for slow flaps). Brush up out of the floor, not down into the floor (only for slow flaps).

For brushes that kick out too far, tell the student not to kick them out and place a tissue box in front of their feet and tell them to flap without kicking it. For students who sequence the footwork as step-brush once they get going, I make them pause after each flap and tell them to make the two sounds of each flap as close together in time as possible.
